The life and work of Pierre Louis by Mathieu Corteel

Mathieu Corteel published his first book "Le Hasard et le Pathologique" in 2020, which traces the history of statistics and probability in medicine from the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. He addresses historical, epistemological and political issues such as the emergence of statistics in health policy and the impact of probability in clinical practice. As an extension of his historical research, he is currently examining at Harvard the vast archival collections of American physicians who traveled to Paris in the early 19th century to learn the numerical method from Pierre Louis. He has also been involved in sociological research on the Covid-19 crisis as a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratoire interdisciplinaire d'évaluation des politiques publiques (LIEPP) and the Centre de sociologie des organisations (CSO) at Sciences Po Paris (2021-2022).
